A New Path Into the Chip Industry for Northeast Students

The 2026 Northeast Microelectronics Internship Program wrapped up its latest cycle, giving students a direct route into the world of semiconductors and advanced manufacturing. Rather than just sitting through lectures, participants spent weeks inside real research labs and fabrication plants, working alongside engineers and scientists who are shaping the next generation of computer chips.

The program brought together undergraduates and recent graduates from schools across the region, pairing them with host institutions that specialize in everything from materials science to circuit design. For many students, it was their first close look at a cleanroom environment, where even a speck of dust can ruin a microchip. Others got hands-on time with equipment used to etch, deposit, and test nanoscale structures.
