As investors look ahead to 2026, two very different technology names are drawing attention: Dell Technologies and Planet Labs PBC. One is a cash-rich hardware giant; the other is a fast-growing but unprofitable satellite imagery company. The choice between them comes down to stability versus speculation.
Dell currently trades at 21.9 times forward earnings and boasts a massive $8.6 billion in free cash flow. That cash flow gives the company room to invest in AI infrastructure, return capital to shareholders, and weather economic downturns. While Dell's revenue growth has been uneven due to the cyclical nature of PC and server sales, its enterprise business and data center demand provide a solid foundation. For risk-averse investors, Dell offers a proven model with real profits.
Planet Labs, on the other hand, operates in the exciting but volatile space sector. The company runs a fleet of small satellites that capture daily images of Earth, serving agriculture, defense, and environmental monitoring clients. Revenue is growing, but Planet remains deeply unprofitable, and its path to consistent earnings is unclear. The biggest risk is satellite failure. A single launch mishap or orbital malfunction could cripple the fleet and wipe out years of progress. Without a cash cushion like Dell's, Planet is a high-stakes bet.
For 2026, the safer play is Dell. Its valuation is reasonable for a company with that much free cash flow, and the AI boom continues to drive demand for its servers and storage. Planet Labs could deliver huge returns if it turns profitable and scales its data services, but the risk of loss is far higher. Investors looking for a steady compounder should lean toward Dell. Those willing to gamble on space technology might find Planet more exciting, but the odds are not in their favor.
