Everllence unveils ESAL technology to improve vessel efficiency by up to 6%

Marine technology firm Everllence has launched its new engine-supported air lubrication technology, called ESAL, which the company says can boost vessel efficiency by as much as 6 percent. The system is designed to work alongside existing ship engines, using a controlled flow of air bubbles along the hull to reduce frictional resistance in the water.

Unlike traditional air lubrication setups that rely on separate compressors, ESAL taps into the engine's own airflow and pressure, cutting the need for extra power-hungry equipment. That integration is what makes the efficiency gain possible, according to the company. The result is lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions for operators, without major retrofitting work on the vessel.

Everllence says the technology has been tested in both model scale and full-scale trials, with consistent results across different hull forms and operating conditions. The system can be installed on newbuilds or added to existing ships during scheduled dry docking, which keeps downtime minimal.

The shipping industry is under growing pressure to cut carbon output, and air lubrication has emerged as one of the more practical tools available today. But most systems on the market require significant auxiliary power, which eats into the net savings. ESAL aims to change that by making the engine do double duty.

The company plans to present more detailed performance data at upcoming maritime industry events, and is already in talks with several shipowners about first installations. No pricing details were released, but Everllence expects the payback period to be short for vessels with high annual fuel use.
