DOUGLAS, Ariz. (AP) -- A new layer of high-tech surveillance equipment is now operational along sections of the southern border wall, marking a significant shift in how authorities monitor remote areas. The technology, which includes advanced radar systems, thermal imaging cameras, and ground sensors, was installed on towers that line the barrier near Douglas, Arizona.
Officials confirmed the upgrades are designed to detect movement in real time, even in harsh desert conditions or at night. The systems can distinguish between humans, vehicles, and wildlife, reducing false alarms that have historically strained agent resources. Data from the sensors is fed directly to a central command center, allowing for quicker response times.
The deployment comes as part of a broader effort to modernize border security without expanding the physical footprint of the wall itself. Critics argue that while the technology improves monitoring, it does not address the root causes of migration. Supporters, however, point to a reported drop in illegal crossings in the areas where the new equipment has been tested.
The towers are solar-powered and designed to operate with minimal maintenance. Agents on the ground say the tools have already helped intercept several groups attempting to cross in remote stretches. The project is expected to expand to other high-traffic corridors along the border in the coming months.
