Manhattan Tech Opens New Electrical Technology Lab

Manhattan Area Technical College has officially opened a new Electrical Technology Lab, giving students a dedicated space to train on the equipment they will encounter in the field. The college held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 15 to mark the completion of the facility, which was built to support the growing demand for skilled electrical workers in the region.

The lab provides hands-on learning stations where students can practice wiring, conduit work, motor controls, and troubleshooting on real systems rather than simulations alone. Instructors say the space allows classes to run more efficiently because multiple students can work at once without waiting for shared equipment.

College leaders described the project as a direct response to workforce needs. Contractors and industry partners across the area have reported a steady shortage of qualified electricians, and the new lab is intended to help close that gap by preparing students for apprenticeships and entry-level jobs.

Students in the program will begin using the lab immediately as part of their regular coursework. The college plans to expand enrollment in the electrical program now that more training capacity is available. Administrators also noted that the facility will support short-term certification courses for workers already in the trade who want to update their skills.
