NCW AI Expo puts human expertise at center of technology discussion

WENATCHEE - The conversation at this year's NCW AI Expo on Aug. 11 steered away from flashy demonstrations and toward a more grounded question: how do people stay in charge when machines get smarter?

Organizers and speakers at the regional event, held at the Town Toyota Center, made a deliberate push to frame artificial intelligence as a support tool rather than a replacement for human decision-making. Panels covered practical uses in healthcare, agriculture, and local government, but the recurring theme was oversight. One session on AI in hiring drew a packed room, with attendees asking how to avoid bias when algorithms screen resumes. Another talk on data privacy warned that small businesses often adopt AI without clear policies on what happens to customer information.

The expo also featured a hands-on lab where attendees tested AI writing assistants and image generators, then discussed where the output fell short. Many walked away with the same takeaway: the technology still needs a human eye to catch errors, interpret context, and make value judgments.

Local tech workers and educators led most of the sessions, and several stressed that training people to work alongside AI matters more than buying the newest software. A closing keynote compared the current moment to the early days of the internet, arguing that the real challenge is not building better models but building better habits around them.

Organizers said they plan to make the human-centered approach a permanent part of the annual event.
