Privacy debate follows expansion of LPD technology program

Laredo Police Department officials are standing behind the expansion of their License Plate Reader (LPD) technology program, arguing that cameras, drones, and real-time intelligence tools are essential for modern crime fighting. The program, which has grown significantly in recent months, allows officers to track vehicles across the city and monitor public spaces from the air. Police leaders say the technology has already helped recover stolen cars and locate missing persons faster than traditional methods.

But not everyone is convinced. A growing number of residents and civil liberties advocates are raising alarms about the lack of clear rules governing how the data is stored, who can access it, and how long it is kept. Some worry that the constant surveillance could lead to misuse or target certain neighborhoods unfairly. At recent city council meetings, several speakers asked for a public audit of the system and a formal privacy policy before any further expansion.

Police Chief Miguel Rodriguez acknowledged the concerns but stressed that the department follows state guidelines and does not share data with federal agencies without a warrant. He also noted that the cameras only capture license plates and public activity, not private conversations or interior views of homes. Still, critics argue that the technology is outpacing the law, leaving citizens with little recourse if their information is mishandled. The debate is likely to continue as the city considers funding for even more cameras and drone units next fiscal year.
