William Paterson University’s Criminal Justice Program Becomes One of First in U.S. to Use Virtual Reality Training Technology

Students enrolled in William Paterson University's criminology, criminal justice, sociology, and social work programs will get a new tool for learning starting in Fall 2026. The university has acquired the WrapReality virtual reality platform, allowing students to step into immersive, scenario-based simulations. This move makes William Paterson one of the first schools in the United States to integrate this kind of technology directly into its criminal justice curriculum.

The system lets students practice real-world situations in a controlled, digital environment. Instead of just reading about police procedures, courtroom interactions, or social work interventions, they can experience them firsthand through the headset. The goal is to bridge the gap between textbook theory and on-the-job decision making.

University officials say the technology helps students build critical thinking skills and empathy. By walking through complex scenarios, they can see the consequences of their choices without any real-world risk. The program is expected to give graduates a significant edge when they enter the workforce, as they will already have practical experience handling tense or delicate situations. The university plans to roll out the training system across multiple departments, ensuring that students from different fields can collaborate on shared simulations.
