CORVALLIS, Ore. - A new study using advanced "molecular movie" technology has uncovered a more affordable method for breaking down a widespread environmental contaminant. The technique, developed at Oregon State University, relies on short-pulse lasers to capture chemical reactions as they happen, one ultrafast frame at a time.
These measurements take place on the femtosecond scale. A femtosecond is one-millionth of one-billionth of a second. To put that in perspective, a femtosecond is to a single second roughly what a second is to 32 million years. This extreme speed allows scientists to watch molecules interact in real time.
By filming these reactions, researchers identified a new pathway for degrading a common pollutant. The process uses simpler, less expensive materials than current methods. The discovery could lead to more practical and cost-effective cleanup strategies for contaminated water or soil.
The work demonstrates how high-speed imaging can solve real-world problems. Instead of relying on trial and error, scientists can now observe exactly how molecules behave during a reaction. This direct view allows them to design better solutions from the start. The findings mark a significant step toward turning a laboratory imaging breakthrough into a tool for environmental protection.
