The new Tesla Roadster is not just a quick electric car. It is a rolling test bed for ideas that few automakers have tried to put into production. Five features in particular set it apart from anything else on the road, and together they explain why the car carries a $250,000 price tag.
The most unusual addition is a set of cold gas thrusters developed with SpaceX. Mounted around the vehicle, they are designed to improve acceleration, braking and cornering by pushing the car in the desired direction. A suction fan system is another bold choice. By drawing the car toward the road, it aims to increase grip and stability during hard driving. A 200kWh battery pack provides the energy for both the motors and these auxiliary systems, far exceeding the capacity of most electric vehicles on sale today.
The fourth technology is the car's extreme performance target, with acceleration figures that rival dedicated hypercars. The fifth is its integration of these systems into a single package that is still meant to be street legal. Whether the thrusters and fan make it to production unchanged remains to be seen, but the Roadster has already shifted expectations for what an electric sports car can attempt.
