Oct. 26, 2025 – A groundbreaking study has revealed encouraging results for a new endovascular intervention technology aimed at treating acute pulmonary embolism (PE). The SPIRARE I first-in-human study, presented at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics conference, evaluated the Vertex Pulmonary Embolectomy System, which utilizes Transforming Fixation (TFX) technology. This prospective, multicenter trial involved ten patients across two European sites, focusing on the safety and performance of this novel system.
Professor Irene Lang, the principal investigator, highlighted the significant advancements TFX technology offers, particularly in enhancing procedural stability and control. The study demonstrated a remarkable safety profile, with no major adverse events reported within 48 hours. Notably, 80% of procedures were completed without the need to re-cross the heart, and 70% did not require a stiff guidewire. Additionally, patients experienced substantial improvements in mean pulmonary artery pressure and right heart function.
The findings underscore the potential of TFX technology to address the unmet needs in pulmonary embolism treatment, paving the way for better patient outcomes and recovery. As the research progresses into the next phase, the medical community remains optimistic about the implications of this innovative approach in cardiovascular care.
